Custodial accounts, like those under the Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) or Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA), are investment accounts you can open for a child. You can contribute funds and manage the investments as the custodian, but the minor is the legal owner of the assets. Once the child reaches the age of majority, which varies by state, they gain full control of the account.
